What is Personal Content?

Personal Content includes notes, essays, reports, and other personal documents that you can upload to your Online Bookshelf and download to read on your eBook device. Your personal content files must meet the requirements specified on our website, and you must have the rights to this material, as defined in the End User License Agreement and on the Personal Content Login page.

Which eBook devices support the use of the new Personal Content feature?

You can use the new Personal Content feature with the ETI-2, eBook devices.

How do I transfer my own personal content from my computer to my Online Bookshelf?

To transfer your personal content from your computer to your Online Bookshelf, just follow the easy steps outlined on our website:

  1. Click Personal Content on the left-hand menu of the eBookstore page.
  2. Enter your eBook User ID and Password in the Login window, then click Login. If you have forgotten either of these, click the Question Mark symbol.
  3. Before selecting the document you want to submit, note the document formats and the maximum size that are acceptable. Note the line below the Browse button (Choose File button on some systems) that tells you how much storage space is available for your personal documents.
  4. To select the document you want to submit, click Browse (or Choose File). A window appears displaying the documents on your computer. Click on the file to highlight it, then click Open (or Choose on some systems). The document name now appears in the field to the left of the Browse button. Now click the arrow to submit your document.
  5. On the next page, a window allows you to edit the title and author name of the document you are submitting. When you’re ready, click the arrow to continue, or click Cancel to end the operation.
  6. The next page tells you that your document is being posted to your Online Bookshelf and how many items are ahead of yours in the conversion queue.
  7. When your document is posted, the next page appears notifying you that your content is ready to download from your Online Bookshelf to the eBookshelf on your eBook device.

To submit new content, click Submit New Content on the left-hand menu. To check the status of your content, click Content Summary on the left-hand menu. The Content Summary page shows how much storage space is used and how much remains. It also shows the submission date, title, size, and status of each document you submitted.

How long does it take to transfer personal content from my computer to my Online Bookshelf?

The time required to upload content from your computer to your Online Bookshelf varies, depending on the number of documents in the queue, the size of the document you are uploading, and the speed of your Internet connection. In general, the process takes only a few minutes.

On the Content Summary page, what do the icons mean?

means the document is in the process of being posted to your Online Bookshelf.
means the document has been posted to your Online Bookshelf.
means the document could not be posted to your Online Bookshelf. If your document cannot be posted, you will receive an error message explaining why.
when you click on the broom, the unsuccessful postings are deleted from the table.
when you click on the wastebasket, the document is deleted from your Online Bookshelf. If you want to keep this document on your eBook device, be sure to transfer it to your eBookshelf before deleting it on the Content Summary page.

Why do some of my MS Word files upload successfully while others do not?

MS Word files with macros cannot be uploaded to your Online Bookshelf. Please remove macros before uploading your documents.

I’m using Mac OS 9, and I keep getting error messages when I try to upload a personal document. What can I do?

Just append the appropriate suffix to the file name:

  • .rtf for Rich Text Format files
  • .rb for Rocket eBook Editions
  • .txt for plain text files
  • .doc for Microsoft Word files
  • .html for HTML files

Using the Personal Content feature, can I transfer e-books in .rb format from my computer to my eBook device?

If your document in .rb format does not exceed 2MB and is not encrypted, you can upload it from your computer to your Online Bookshelf by using the Personal Content feature on this website.

Can I upload images?

At this time, standalone image files cannot be uploaded. However, pictures that are embedded in a Word document generally can be uploaded. The maximum file size is limited to 2MB.

What is the maximum size of each document I can upload?

The maximum size allowed for each document is 2MB.

How much storage space do I have for my personal content?

The Content Summary page tells you how much storage space you have used and how much remains. To access this page: Click Personal Content on the left-hand menu on the website, log in if you have not already done so, and click Content Summary on the left-hand menu. The “Select a Document” page (which follows the Login page) also tells you how much storage space remains for your personal content.

How can I find out which personal documents use the most storage space?

The Content Summary page tells you the size of each document you uploaded, or how much storage space it occupies. To access this page: Click Personal Content on the left-hand menu on the website, log in, and click Content Summary on the left-hand menu. The Content Summary page shows the documents that you uploaded, including submission date, title, size, and status for each of them. You can sort your list of documents by date, title, size, and status simply by clicking on those headings.

How can I free up more storage space for my personal content?

You can make more storage space available by deleting documents on your Online Bookshelf. Be sure to transfer the document to your eBookshelf before you delete it from your Online Bookshelf. The document will remain on your eBookshelf after you delete it from your Online Bookshelf. You can delete a document from your Online Bookshelf two ways: on the device itself, or on the Content Summary page. Deleting the document from one view deletes it from both views. Again, the document will remain on your eBookshelf after you delete it from your Online Bookshelf.

Can I keep personal content on my eBookshelf and delete it from my Online Bookshelf, so that I can create more storage space?

Yes, you can delete documents from your Online Bookshelf in order to create more storage space. The document will remain on your eBookshelf after you delete it from your Online Bookshelf. Please note that when you delete a document from your Online Bookshelf, it is also removed from the Content Summary page.

Will my personal content be private and secure?

Your personal content will be secure because you are uploading it from your computer to your Online Bookshelf, and it can be accessed only on your eBook device. Your personal content is also protected by our Privacy Policy.

Can I share my personal content with another eBook user?

You can share your personal content with another eBook user by emailing the original document as an email attachment and allowing that eBook user to upload the document to his/her Online Bookshelf.

One of my personal content documents has disappeared from my Online Bookshelf. What happened?

Deleting a document on the Content Summary page of the website also deletes it on your Online Bookshelf. You will need to upload this document again.

Can I hide personal content that is on my Online Bookshelf?

You cannot hide personal content on your Online Bookshelf. You can only delete it.

I downloaded some personal content to my eBook device and it doesn’t look the way I thought it would. Is there anything I can do to improve it?

If your personal content doesn’t look like you thought it would (especially the margins for a simple text document), try uploading it as a Word document (.doc format).
